an afternoon in windsor

So it’s Saturday and a beautiful morning so I thought I’d head out to Windsor for the afternoon. I had my multiple entry ticket to the castle, and let’s just say, I was one of the few people they got to say ‘welcome back’ to. I felt special. :) Anyhoo, I went because I wanted to spend more quality time in St. George’s Chapel, and well, being the friendly gal that I am, got my own personal tour with one of the security guards there. I seem to have a way with the men in this country. Anyhoo, he told me a few things that weren’t written in any guidebooks.

My real purpose for going though was to check out Henry the VIII’s final resting place. I don’t know why I have such a fascination with Henry, but it’s a mix of awe and disgust. He was perhaps one of the biggest arrogant f*cks I’ve ever learned about in that much detail. Love how he is buried with Jane Seymour, the only wife he ever claimed to love…and incidentally the only wife that gave him a son. Coincidence? I think not.

I also wanted to go and stare at my dream china set, the Queen Victoria. Seriously, is it wrong to be in love with a purple, white and gold china set? Wait, don’t answer that! One tea cup with saucer costs a whopping £35. The teapot alone is £65. So I’ll just admire from a distance because even I can’t come up with a legitimate reason to purchase it. I know, it’s an heirloom piece, yadda yadda yadda, but honestly, I’ll only be able to enjoy it (hopefully) for the next 50 or so years. Maybe I'll buy the thimble for £10 as a momento! ha ha

I walked through the streets but didn’t take many photos as I’ve been here before, but did manage to get a pic of the crooked tea house. I should have went there for afternoon tea but ended up at a fish and chip shop and finally had a battered sausage with chips and mushy peas. Wish I would have seen the words ‘half orders available’ earlier. I think I ate maybe a third of it. And what is battered sausage, some of you may ask. Well, imagine fish and chips but instead of fish inside, it’s a humungous pork sausage. Basically, a heart attack just waiting to happen. No wonder I could only eat just half of the sausage. But I was a good girl, I ate all the mushy peas.

So I’m off to see Up tonight at Baker Street Cinemas. I was going to go see HP6, but thought I should do one thing today that was new to me (besides eating a deep fried sausage). Jonah will be proud…I think he’s seen it a couple times already so I’m far behind.

  1. Hey Gio - love your post. I am completely obsessed with Henry the VII too. I know he's buried with Jane, but isn't Anne Boleyn buried there too? By the way, I say buy your teapot and cup!!

  2. Anne was buried in an unmarked grave in the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula. Her skeleton was identified during renovations of the chapel in the reign of Queen Victoria and Anne's resting place is now marked in the marble floor.
