its amazing how life can be so quiet and then you have three fun days in a row that you can blog about mid week?
sunday i decided to go for a walk from marylebone, through mayfair and green park, to hang out at buckingham palace. the sky was blue, the weather was in double digits...how could i resist? now i know the neighbourhood i live in is considered a nice neighbourhood, but wow...mayfair!
i walked by claridges, and for those foodie fans, i passed gordon ramsay at claridges. then as i walked down davies i connected to berkley square where you could shop at bently and oh, next door...you can shop at rolls royce. wow. do we even sell those in calgary. very large cars though with minimal window space. don't know about you but i like to see around me when i drive.
i finally made it to buckingham palace and took a decent look around. i read up about a few things before heading over so i knew exactly what i was looking at this time. i made my way through green park to canada gate, which lead to the victoria memorial, which of course, is right outside the palace. there were tons of people littered about and i walked up to the gate and realized i was about to see the changing of the guard. i looked behind me to see if other tourists were seeing what i saw and no...they either didn't know or didn't care. it was like a private audience of one and i enjoyed every moment (maybe about 3 minutes worth). it was a nice day.
the weather continued to cooperate on monday so i decided to have a lovely lunch at st. paul's cathedral and the walk home from work. an amazing 4 miles and it only took me about an hour fifteen. one thing brandy tells me is 'tell me what you see'. and this is what i saw. i walked down london wall where i saw....fragments of the london wall. i walked by st. pauls again, past the city temple, and the sun was always shining on me. i felt pretty amazing.
on tuesday i got a call from my new friend laura...another canadian, i met laura when she was flat hunting. she came to see my flat and although it wasn't quite what she was looking for, we hit it off and have now struck up a friendship. its creepy how similar we are...same age, same nationality, dark hair, glasses, love theatre, worked in not for profit, it just goes on and on really. so she had a friend who had to give up 2 tickets to the london eye so we thought we'd check out the city at night. so beautiful to see the monuments all lit up. i look out there sometimes and see these amazing sites and think i'm so lucky...i can say that i live here. for as much as i make fun of the packed tubes, the tourists that get in the way, and the pidgeons....sniff...the pidgeons, london to me is still such a vibrant and lively place to live. i'm so glad i came here.
anyhoo...not really an in depth mid week blog, but i was happy to share some of this with you. this summer is going to be great. many visitors, and i finally feel like when they come, i can show them the real london.
