my scalille are cooking
i don't know what it is about being separated from my mother by one gigantic ocean, but i have this need to perfect all of her recipes. earlier i tackled stuffed eggplant (we just called it melanzanne at home) and i think it was quite successful. my friend horacio gave me huge compliments, which i take seriously since he lived in cosenza (or was it with people from cosenza) and ate it all the time. so, i consider that a success.
today, i'm trying to make some scalille and i'm not being extremely successful. i thought i had the dough consistency correct but after the 30 minute raise, the dough was too soft. hopefully adding more dough and giving it more time to raise works. if it does, i'll post a picture of my success later. i wanted to make a huge batch for my yearly italy day party (this year, its on the 13th).
but to continue on my italian day, i'm taking off to kate's soon to watch under the tuscan sun with the gals. we head for sicily in 2 weeks to taormina. i've always wanted to go and the fact that its coming up so soon is very exciting.
so last night, i met up with larissa and johnny (he's fabulous) and we went to The Wild Party put on by Bridewell Theatre. It closes today so consider it a blessing...i think.
most of the acting was real good, not all of the actors could sing though, which is a bit of a catastrophe since its a musical. larissa and i went because a former acquaintance (and i think still one of larissa's friends) was performing. her name is anne-marie (formerly married to adam leigh for those of you who know the theatre peeps in calgary). anyhoo, i'm glad we went. it was a decent show, but it definitely had an idie feel to it. the theatre was so tiny and if you weren't careful, you'd miss it, but it kind of reminded me of the pumphouse theatre (the joyce doolittle theatre). which was cool.
i'm not sure what tomorrow will bring, but i'm hoping it will include pics and videos of rose and george's wedding today. i'm so sad i am missing this great event. my heart and thoughts are with them today though. i just am bummed about missing out on the weding ming-a-ling and the candy take homes. sad sad sad.
i'll get over it. maybe later though. :)
the end result isn't as good as i hoped
OK...so they're a bit heavier than what mom makes and they look ALL WRONG, but they taste right. but like i said, a little more dense. i had to give up on the shape because the little balls kept breaking off and i made them look more like donuts. but my house now smells like when mom used to make them, and i'd be in the kitchen, playing with the chairs and putting them in order like an airplane and i'd play airline stewardess.
i was 7
it was fab
maybe they'll work next time
