madrid day 2

considering we had such a late night we had such an early start! too much to see in too little time. so what do you want after a night of wine and cocktails? grease of course.

we found a little cafe called cafeteria ricote where we had the greasiest breakfast ever - eggs and bacon. top that with a cafe con leche and some churos to dip in some sugar, and we're all set for a hefty day.

our first stop was the museo nacional reina sofia home of pablo picasso's el guernica. such an impressive peice of art - it was HUGE and i was bamboozled at why they would not have security around the painting. i mean, an alarm sounds if you get near 10 feet of the work, but how does this stop anyone from charging at it or throwing something at it. and two female guards? in suits only? they're walking a fine line. even la pieta sits behind the glass and she's in the basilica in vatican city!

funnily enough we were exhausted so had a nice sit in the museums courtyard. where i promptly sat on wet paint (white) while wearing my shorts (black) and walla...my sweater was wrapped around my waist for the rest of the day. luckily enough it was in the mid 20s. sigh.

from there we went for a gigantor walk past the museo nacional del prado, taking breaks as we went along (i think grandmas passed us), then to the parque del buen retiro. it was such a beautiful park, full of sun worshipers on the lake (by the monumento alfonso xiii), sitting out having coffee, eating ice cream and just enjoying the last day of october. such a stark contrast to the year before where on the 30th i was in vancouver for the madonna concert, then stuffing my gob with greek food on the 31st and walking down robson with martin, gina, alison and chris.

in the middle of the park, hunger struck...so we promptly head back towards our hotel passing the plaza de la cibeles and the plaza de canovas del castillo. when we got back to our hotel we had our one and only paella - mixed with meat and seafood. wow - it was so filling. so what can you possibly do aftere eating all that paella? take a nap of course.

waking up just in time for dinner...we went to el rincon de esteban (our first choice, casa lucio was all booked up). the sangria was absolutely amazing, and unfortunately i was still full so only chowed on some lamb chops with patatas fritas. it was at this time i realized we hadn't had dessert, but there was no flipping room! there wasn't any room for drink either...and well, we were all out of steam anyway.

on this day, and for the rest of the weekend, we discoverd the calling out of YT/MT...where we'd pick out guys and brazenly declare if they were 'your type' or 'my type' - it brought an interesting element to an already obvious action of staring at hot spanish men.

i also learned a few tricks of the beggars trade...seeing one lame man walk freely after getting his beggars money, a legless woman stand, and an old man carrying a box on his back only to realize it was empty.

and thus ended day two in madrid...
