yet another new experience

today my friend salvatore was sworn in as one of the metropolitan special constables. one of my colleagues (yes that's right, a coworker) has dedicated his spare time to be a voluntary policeman. talk about true grit. i was very honoured to be one of his 6 allowed guests, which included some of his neighbours and friends from his buddhist temple.

i am very fortunate to know salvatore - like my parents, he's from calabria! and today i met another of his compatriots who grew up in....tropea. dear lord. its my most favouritest town in italy ever. anyhoo, so proud of my friend salvo!

the ceremony was quite quick with some speakers from the metropolitan police followed by the graduates saying their oath to protect and serve. a magistrate swore them in and then one by one, they were called up to receive their warrant and certification of completion. afterward, there was a buffet brunch and then we got to take some pics around the training grounds. it was a new experience for me and one that i was fortunate to be able to witness. i know that police often get as good as they give - we're not all perfect, but knowing the type of upstanding person salvatore is makes me feel that much more confident that there truly are some people out there that want to do the best for society.
