Last night I went to Tring with 9 of my coworkers to watch another co-worker in her community theatre production of Fawlty Towers. if you check out the site, she’s the one dressed as Polly, the maid.
So much fun. And did you know Fawlty Towers also spells Flowery Twats….
It essentially was three of the best episodes (and yes, the hotel inspector was one of them) re-enacted on stage. And for community theatre, it was pretty decent (and well, Natalie is just so damned cute!). Fawlty and Manuel were pretty big shoes to fill (who can top John Cleese?) but the actors were up for the challenge, and if anything, probably watched all of the epsidoes of Fawlty Towers to get their mannerisms quite precise. How’s that for dedication?
The theatre (Courtyard Theatre)was a great venue (aside from being stifling hot). The space looked like a converted barn and the risers were quite stunning. The set was quite elaborate for something considered non professional from hotel rooms on the top floor, to the office/reception/kitche and dining room set up as close to the real thing as possible.
As for Tring, it is located in Hertfordshire (ya, check that one out on a map – can you say way the frick out in the country????). I got home just before midnight…it was a long journey. It had the cutest high street (even though the one ATM didn’t work) and it always amazes me how these places have excellent restaurants. We went to a ‘pub’ called Akeman’s that had some excellent food (and wine).
Anyhoo…I just wanted to say it was a lot of fun doing something as normal as seeing a friend in a play and going to a pub for a quick bite beforehand.
Sometimes I marvel at how similar my life is here from what I did in Calgary, yet it can be amplified to the nth degree.
Tomorrow, I head for Taormina Sicily for five glorious days. I hope to impress my flatmate and friends with my return…and my super duper excellent tan.
