Myknos

The ride to the island was a bumpy one and a walk around the ferry proved to be quite difficult (we decided we should always fly). It was like walking in a fun house as we staggered from the back of the boat to our seats near the front. I was laughing hysterically, naturally!

We found out later that Greece had been hit with some raging winds and in fact, we had nothing but wind the entire time we were on the island. However, that’s probably what kept us sane as it was mighty hot and we were kept cool with the constant breeze.

We got to our myconian hotel and met with some room issues again. We had booked rooms with a sea view and they gave us nothing of the sorts. We were able to argue our way to the rooms we actually booked and wanted to show them that the pics they posted on the site were not indicative of the place we were staying at. They tried to cover up saying the didn’t have internet access (which they did) so we used the crackberry and in their shame, they gave us the rooms we paid for. We were not impressed. Afterward though, the hotel ended up being decent, but the rooms were very small and the showers were shitty. That being said, the people who worked there (aside from the ass that tried to deny us the internet access) were quite lovely. In the end we got the rooms we paid for, a free five course meal (lovely again) and a free spa treatment (which we declined). They were willing to send us to their 5 star resort but then we’d be away from the town centre so we sucked it up.

So like Athens, these are the highlights.

  • Semelia - it’s an expensive bar but in a great location, where we sat on outdoor couches and drank Heineken beer watching the sun go down. We’d return to this spot again as the view was incredible.

  • Porta – after searching for a great dance bar we ended up at Porta, a gay bar that had the best music on the island (and holy cheap booze!). We knew every song and sang as loud as we could to our heart’s content, and on the way out, one patron pulled me aside, gave me an air kiss and yelled YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL VOICE. He was my favourite new friend.

  • Skandinavia was another bar we went to but even by 2 am, there weren’t many people dancing so we stayed outside and drank, watching the cheesiest vacationers trying to pick up the Aussie girls to my right. It was so embarrassing to watch them but she turned them down so politely. That island is great if you’re looking to get some if you know what I mean (I’m being PG in case my niece reads this). My fave person at Skandinavia was the Burberry Guy. His friends kept asking him if it was ok to go up to the dance floor and he’d give his head a brisque shake. We decided if the dance floor wasn’t good enough for Burberry guy, it wasn’t good enough for us. So we decided to chair dance. We did that a lot.

  • I drank many pina coladas. Mmmmm

  • My fave part of Skandinavia was how we got lost in the tiny streets of Mykonos on the way back from the bar. We some how managed to walk about 45 minutes only to end up back at the bar…hahaha. So funny!

<;i>Jimmy’s is the best place for a Gyro and a crepe. Makes me wonder if Jimmy’s A&A in Calgary is named after this joing. It was so fricking yummy! Especially the crepes. We went back to the same place every night but one for a crepe and we all kind of crushed on the crepe guy, who we saw there as early as 6 pm and still turning out the crepes at 2 am.

  • We ate a lot of good greek food here as well, mainly ordering our dips (taramasalata, melanzasalata, tzatziki, and much much more), kalamari, gemista, souvlaki, roasted potatoes, greek meatballs, blah blah blah). We also feasted on baklava, galaktobouriko, and my fave powdered almond cookies. Mmmm. We also discovered the greek sesame snacks, they had ketchup chips (yay) and various kinds of nutella (brown – milk chocolate, white – white chocolate, pink – strawberry and white chocolate). We ate at Oasis, Jimmy’s and an Italian joint called Pasta Fresca (we needed a break from the greek food). But the best restaurant was just a five minute walk from our hotel called M….. and the view was incredible. We sat on a buttress overlooking the waters and the sunset. I wish we had gone there the first night so we could have gone there on more than one occasion.

  • It was in Mykonos that gina moved to SPF 2. haha

  • The beaches were incredibly beautiful with such clear and fairly warm waters. We went to (in order of our faves) Elia, Paradise Beach, Platas Gialos. Elia was further out (we rented a car to get there) hence the quietest…until this loud Italian man came and decided to have an argument in front of our chairs so I told him as politely as I could in Italian to move away from us please and speak somewhere else. Then he went ape shit on me indicating it was a public beach, blah blah blah so I told him to move on as did many others around me (the actually applauded me and thumbed me up) and I think he took the hint as he was quiet and left our area when he took other calls. Loser. Paradise was a party beach so it was louder, full of nude bathers and such, but it was a nice beach. Platas Gialos wasn’t the best because the wind and the sand made things quite messy…and there were loud obnoxious N. American 20 somethings behind us that were very annoying. We were happy to go poolside a couple times at our hotel (salt water pool).

  • My fave conversation while tanning…
Gina: My boobs are so white
Chris: My penis is so white it’s practically blue

  • Like the drivers at the amalfi coast, the drivers in Mykonos were crazy! Giant busses shuttling us from beach to beach drove so fast on tiny roads and I swear I saw my life flash before my eyes on several occasions. But as per usual, I got somewhere in one piece anyway. We rented a Fiat Panda one day and drove ourselves straight to Starbucks (yes, you read that right) and we spent a whole 5 euro for gas. It was awesome.

  • Mykonos gave me a lovely gift while I was there in the shape of an infectious spider bit on my right forearm. I’ll be surprised if I don’t scar. Blah.

  • On a sombre note, there were so many kids trying to sell glow in the dark bracelets for money…it was so sad. Some of the kids were as young as three and on one drunken walk back from the bars, we saw the youngest (I swear she was three) sleeping while leaning up against a wall at 2 am. Where is her mother? It was heart breaking.

Greece was fantastic and I have to say, the people there were quite lovely. The food was incredible and the heat was a welcomed blessing. I think if I return to Greece again, it’ll be with a significant other (just one and not 4) and I’ll head for Santorini.

Funny…as I write the blog there’s some random greek epic on the telly…’hercules’ is battling a 7 headed giant snake. Go herc!
